The Dark Side of the Moon (1990)

It’s Satan vs. the Mullet! In outer space! With not much at stake! And one of the more bogus mysteries of all time solved!

I’ll be the first to admit though that despite that really great set up, the movie failed to deliver on its obvious promise.

The movie’s script was the root of its problems since I didn’t understand anything that was happening. Twin brothers apparently wrote it and they must have been using that twin ESP all twins have so that it made sense to them, but not to us non-twins that weren’t plugged into their secret language. Kidnapped (1960)

I had been hoping that Kidnapped was a movie along the lines of Treasure Island – you know something involving a guy with one leg and a murderous little kid who didn’t fret over stabbing some scurvy sea dog in the face when the chips were down.

What I got was Oscar-winner (not for this movie obviously) Peter Finch hamming it up as Alan Breck Stewart and Hawaii Five-0‘s James MacArthur as David acting all despondent after having to plug some scallywag while he and Stewart were trying to take over a ship. Planet of the Vampires (1965)

PlanetOfTheVampiresPosterThis is a well aged slice of 1960s Italian sci-fi cheese from Mario Bava (Hercules In The Haunted World, Baron Blood) that tells the horrifying tale of some astronauts who get in a whole heap of trouble on the mysterious planet of Aura.

Two spaceships, the Galliot and the Argus use their space TVs to contact one another regarding their mission. There has been a radio signal emanating from Aura. This means either one of two things – that there is intelligent life there or more probably, that there is intelligent life there that is laying a dastardly and nefarious trap to enslave the human race! Recoil (1998)

Recoil DVD CoverThe final and greatest of the three films beginning with the letter R that Gary Daniels and PM Entertainment made together, Recoil jettisons the ridiculous set ups of both Rage and Riot, dispenses with annoying subplots involving reporters and Sugar Ray Leonard, and allows Gary to navigate a series of impressively destructive and violent action scenes that leave the viewer with a single burning question: does the guy in charge of PM Entertainment have some kind of bizarre fetish for cars sailing through the air and crashing in spectacular fashion? The Million Dollar Duck (1971)

Dean Jones, who appeared in every single movie the Walt Disney Company made from 1965-1975, stars as a scientist who is trying to teach animals stuff. For reasons never adequately explained, he is fixated on trying to teach an obviously dull-witted duck how to do something. His boss ridicules him for this, but once you get a gander at Dean’s home life, you begin to understand why he feels a duty to try and help the brain damaged of the animal kingdom.
